It’s February 6th, 2010. I haven’t posted on here in almost a year. Damn shame I know. But I need something to do in 2010 sooo guess what! I decided to start blogging again. I’m just gonna post about… everything. Lol. From Current Events to Pop Culture, Personal Stuff aaannnd Special Interest pieces. I’m gonna do anything and everything. If you have an idea for something you’d like me to write about, let me know! I’ll write about it without haste! My goal is to do at least 3 posts a week! I make a PROMISE to keep to my word! Worst I Ever Seen

Yesterday (July 2nd) the internet buzzed with talk of Drake’s newly premiered and, sad to say, everyone’s high hopes were dashed. Directed by Kanye West, this video was a plethora of bouncing cleavage and confusing concepts to which MOST of the viewers did not understand. It starts off with a slow motion, kind of “flashback” vibe (which is carried on throughout the video, reflected in the style of lighting and Xpro filming). Then out of nowhere, a group of buxom beauties busts through the paper jumping up and down in their too-tight, too short, too small, and “too much” outfits. The theme of the video? Drake is the coach of an all women’s (i suppose and HOPE that it’s adult) basketball team and he’s basically… doing nothing else. There’s a game and the ladies go in the locker room, a couple solo shots of Drake, a small acting scene where he gives the girls a pep talk, a cameo by Trey Songz, and that’s about it. Personally I didn’t like it one bit but other’s have different opinions. You know what I say, to each his own. I give it 2.5 Mic’s. (I’m using mic’s for my rating system instead of stars. Didn’t wanna seem too cliche.)

That New New (Artists On The Rise)- LMFAO

Based in Hollywood, California, the rising electronic/hip-hop (better known as electro-hop) group LMFAO is making an addition to the house of music in our world today. Comprised of two members – DJ Redfoo & DJ Sky Blu – this dynamic duo have managed to combine the likings of the hip-hop genre we know so well with the more undergroup genre of electronica music, creating their own new flavor to add to the musical broth of modern pop culture. The duo’s first album (entitled – “Party Rock) was leaked in late June 2009. A week later, the group officially released their album in the iTunes music store. The first single off of this island – “I’m In Miami Bitch” – peaked at a staggering #73 (not surprising for a new artist). As for the duo’s off brand name? Well there’s a simple origin for that – Sky Blu’s grandma. When he told his grandmother the original planned name for the group (on iChat) she simply replied “LMFAO” and that’s where it all began. Of course, both DJ’s parents hated it, but they pushed on regardless & continued their career’s as up and coming artists who were determined to start a movement in music. I like their style, it’s different & that’s what you have to be in order to ruffle some feather’s and get some buzz. Only time will tell how far they’re gonna go (I mean, they’ve already worked with such major producers as Will.I.Am. and Lil Jon). Wanna know more? Here’s where you can find them on the net:

Needless to say, it’s the newest dance craze. Straight out of cali, the “New Boyz” have managed to turn a… less than appropriate term (in more than one sense) into a dance that has spread like wildfire nation wide. Can’t knock their hustle, they made something out of nothing, but sadly, just as the chicken noodle soup and “lean wit it rock wit it”, this craze is soon to fade into the darkness and gain it’s place in the hall of dance fads.

The Art Form FORMERLY Known As Hip-Hop

After the less than acceptable acts performed at the 2009 BET Awards, I (as an active member of the hip-hop community and fan of REAL hip-hop/music) wondered – what happened to the identity of hip-hop? It’s gone from this revolutionary outlet of the less fortunate’s ideals, beliefs, struggles, and stories, to this money hungry monster that is all about feeding the negative cliche’s about hip-hop and the musicians (better yet: poets) that create it. To capture the true severity of this metamorphosis, I felt the need to reflect on the foundation of the art, the basis, the beginning:

Let’s take it back… Back to the days of Slick Rick, KRS One, Public Enemy, Afrika Bambaataa, Grand Master Flash, (the earlier days of) LL Cool J, and many many more respectable artists that used their powers of oration and creativity to tell their Horatio Alger story to the masses using the art form FORMERLY known as hip-hop. Even with their flaunting of the monies they made, girls they booked, diamonds they sported, and cars they drove, they managed to stay humble in a way. They never forgot where they came from and ALWAYS reminded people that with every inch of fame they gained, they experienced a mile of hardship and struggle. They (even without knowing) used rhetorical style and pleas to the masses ethos and pathos (e.g. LL Cool J’s – I Need Love in which he spoke of the cognitive need for affection from that special girl). They also managed to let the haters know that “hey! I went through the same stuff (and possibly even worse) that you did! the same struggles with poverty and the daunting appeal of temptation running across all 5 of my senses.” THAT, my friend, is the true essence of hip-hop. It is an art form used to express a story that would otherwise go unheard. You see, in order to get the attention of the crowd, you first have to SCREAM OUT LOUD and make some noise. Ruffle some feathers and create some buzz. Do something different! And that is exactly what they did. This style had never been heard nor seen before and yet you could faintly tell all of it’s influences (from previous era’s such as the jazz era and rock era). How they drew inspiration from these fellow titans in music and used their inspiration to create a style of their own. That my friends, is hip-hop. It’s not just a form of art, but a lifestyle! You gotta live hip-hop in order to MAKE hip-hop. And when I say live hip-hop, I mean you have to experience life at it’s deepest and darkest & it’s fullest and brightest.

Now, back to OUR era. The days of soulja boy, lil wayne, the gs boyz, and so many more artists who claim to be emcee’s. Now I’m not gonna front, lil wayne is a KILLER when it comes to the rhymes, but his lyrics don’t have substance like they used to. He let the fame go to his head & that was his downfall (but I digress, this isn’t a piece that was simply made to bash lil wayne.) It IS however, a piece that was made to spark a flame in the thought process of the mind and create some buzz. What happened to hip-hop? Why did it happen? What is it gonna take to get back to that place where we started? If we stay on this path, where are we headed in the future? I honestly don’t know, but I can say that whatever it is, it’s most likely been staring us in the face this whole time. (still digressing) Back to our era. With songs like “stanky legg” and “donk” it’s no WONDER people are starting to lose respect for hip-hop. The songs and lyrics no longer contain stories, they no longer make the listeners THINK and WONDER. They just make people shake their asses and do the dances that are implied in the lyrics. “She got a donk, watch her hit the flo’, I like the way she move and the way she snap and roll”. WHAT can you get out of that but an ass shakin fest? Exactly. Now I’ll admit, there are some artists such as (dare I say it) Plies, Common, Wale, Kid Cudi, and Asher Roth who are on the forefront of the new generation of hip-hop. Constantly reminding us of why we love the music. But when you see someone like, hmmm, T-Pain, wearing a 10lb 197kts platinum, diamon encrusted necklace/pendant that says that says… “BIG ASS CHAIN”, you start to wonder what the hell is going on. (I think I’m starting to digress again. Sorry, but that chain really frustrated me when I first saw it). Long story short, hip-hop has lost is substance, it’s meaning, it’s emotion, it’s feeling, it’s flavor, it’s passion, it’s EVERYTHING, and it’s turned into this lifeless occupation for those who wanna be famous for no reason and have no respect for the art. It’s sad really, and I wonder what it’s gonna take for people to finally realize that it’s all flashing lights, smoke, and mirrors. Some might say “aye, you can’t knock the hustle. they’re making their money and they’re happy doing it”. You’re COMPLETELY right. They’re making their money, but at what cost? Losing a form of art which has helped DEFINE the african american race as a people? No, I don’t think any amount of monetary compensation is worth THAT MUCH.

So to end, I leave you with this, Blackalicious ( a hip-hop duo started in the late 90′s) said – in their 1994 single “Swan Lake” – “A baller aint a baller if he aint got balls, A scholar aint a scholar if he aint got, scholastic opportunities and if not that, then learn from life, beyond all that material crap.” I find this quote to truly mean: You’re nothing if you don’t know the TRUE meaning of who you are and what you believe in. You won’t be anything until you learn to see past all the trivial things in life and get down to the nitty gritty and learn what the things that we create are truly about. So, to this generation of rappers (NOT emcee’s) I have one word to offer and one word only: LEARN.

well i didn’t do much today. sat in the house and watched my lovely niece. then went to the harbor and applied at “ketchup” the restaurant. hopefully i get a job there because it seemed nice which means big tips. lls. but anywhoo yeah today was a bit of a boring day =| applying at starbucks tomorrow. i need a job asap! i’ve made i a goal to blog every day this summer so you’ll see a lot of these random & boring blogs. sad but hey i’m achieving my goal. =] outtie 5000.

Caribbean Festival ’09

So yesterday i took a trip to the DC Caribbean Carnival (’09) with some friends and needless to say, it was crowded, hot, dirty, and COMPLETELY FUN (for the most part). drag queens and half naked men/women called for a momentous celebration of all caribbean cultures and countries meshed together into one day of fun that really was quite interesting. after our GREAT view of the festivities we decided to trek ALL THE WAY DOWN GEORGIA AVENUE to U Street/Cardozo Metro (and SOMEHOW we ended up being in the parade.) all those people, lord, it was so crowded. we stayed in a single file line for about 5 blocks. but anywho after that we (we being me and alexis) took the metro to pentagon city mall and just chilled =] had some nice bonding time. then went home. lol.
